Went to the Grandson's college graduation a couple of weeks ago. The
hotel we had reservations for was not in the data base of my 2008
Lexus RX350 and therefore was not easy to locate. I called the Lexus
dealer to inquire about an update to the data base. He said that it
would cost $350. Anyone know of a way to update the thing for a little
less arm and leg? (Please spare the comments about anyone having a
Lexus should be able to afford the update).

At least you know what flak you're going to get from the idiots who
think throwing money around for its own sake is somehow meaningful.

Ebay is a start.

Or, as a backup, a handheld sat-nav like a Garmin--something you can
easily and cheaply keep updated and in the car, or take from car to car,
and bring out as needed. Yeah, cheesy--but it works as a backup, if
nothing else.

You may want to consider that any update for an '08 will contain very
little information that's not already there. The likelihood of your
needing anything in the future that's contained in an update and isn't
on your version is very slim.

Exactly - that's why I don't want to plunk down big bucks for an
upgrade.

If the name of the hotel doesn't work, put in the address instead.

The problem is that it's not worth half that price, particularly since the
OP has a 2008.

Think of it this way. If you asked me for a map, and I gave you a 5 year
old map, would you care?

Also, it really pisses me off how car companies overcharge for such items.
Navigation and satellite radio systems are priced at over 5 times what the
comparable stand alone versions cost. It's just an outrage.

Dave, You asked for a reduced price. I sent you a link for quite a
reduced price plus a rebate if you send in your old OEM DVD.
Stop whining, my friend. I sent you what you asked for. It is not my
fault that you still do not want to pay for it. Look on Ebay and you may
find a non-OEM DVD that will melt in the DVD reader on a hot summer day
when you really need it. OK?

Also, since the OP owns a 2008, the DVD you proposed is probably the same

You can update and still not get that hotel since you already have the
2008 map. The nav maps from different companies are updated semi- or
annually. Even if the hotel isn't on the map, you should be able to
navigate to the street address. NavTeq map is a decent map for US,
better than TeleAtlas. But maybe Toyota use the cheap "lite" version
in your RX.

Check your nav system to navigate to the street address. I hope it's
not too cheap to do that too.

Did you try the address as other posters have suggested? What's the
name of the hotel, street address, and city, and how long has it been
there?

Of course I could have entered the hotel's address (if I knew it).
I bought the 350 in July '07, so maybe it had that year's data
base installed. At any rate, from now on, I'll try and set the Nav
system up BEFORE I leave home instead of waiting until I am nearing
the destination to do it. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I recall reading a thread on the Garmin newsgroup that discussed nav map
updates. It implied years can pass between the "freezing" the map data for
a production release and the release of that content on a nav update. That
is, map data that came with your '07 350 may reflect data as of '05. I
would think that street/highway info, once constructed, change little over
time but the POI stuff would be much more dynamic as businesses come and
go.

I don't think Toyota uses Garmin. It's probably a low cost system by
Fujitsu-Ten, without a SiRF III antenna or whatever cutting edge
tehcnology they're using these days. Fujitsu-Ten makes a lot of
entertainment systems for Toyota vehicles.

If that was a Garmin system then OP would have gotten a FREE map
update within the following year with registration, instead of having
to pay Toyota $350 for an update!
