Motorists and experts say throttles, not floor mats, to blame for
sudden acceleration
Amid widening concern over acceleration events, Toyota has cited
'floor mat entrapment.' But reports point to another potential cause:
the electronic throttles that have replaced mechanical systems.

Eric Weiss was stopped at a busy Long Beach intersection last month
when he said his 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup unexpectedly started
accelerating, forcing him to stand on the brakes to keep the bucking
truck from plowing into oncoming cars.

But Weiss is convinced his incident wasn't caused by a floor mat. He
said he removed them months earlier on the advice of his Toyota dealer
after his truck suddenly accelerated and rear-ended a BMW.

None of the cars I ever owned, that were equipped with floor mats, ever
suffered from uncontrolled acceleration. So I guess I could be one who
believes that floor mats do not cause cars to accelerate, but then again,
I'm not an expert in the field of floor mats. ;)

Of course Weiss is sure it wasn't caused by floormats. It is far mor
elikely that the problem was caused by pedal confusion (either pushing
the wrong pedal or pushing both the brake and accelerator pedals at
the same time). People do it all the time. Some people refuse to
understand that they casued the problem and prefer blaming mysterious
forces. Trial lawyers are more than willing to encourage this.
