"As early as 2004, authorities investigated reports of unintended
acceleration in Toyota's best-selling model, the Camry.

But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration looked at
incidents lasting only 1 second or less.

That limit came after a former official who went to work for Toyota
shortly before the investigation began was involved in discussions
with former colleagues at the safety agency, according to documents in
a lawsuit filed by the estate of Guadalupe Alberto of Flint, who died
in 2008 when she lost control of her 2005 Camry."

Well, it's too bad that Toyota would try to shove something like that
under the carpet. And look how many lives it cost.

NEWS: GM recalls 944,000 vehicles for fire hazard

Recall involves vehicles that are equipped with windshield washer fluid
heaters.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- August 28, 2008 -- General Motors is recalling
944,000 vehicles, 850,000 of them in the United States, because of the
potential for a fire in the vehicles' heated windshield washer fluid
system.

A short circuit in the circuit board that controls the system could cause
a grounding wire to overheat. That could lead to smoke and the
malfunctioning of other electrical components, GM (GM, Fortune 500) said
in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In rare cases, it could cause a fire, GM said.

GM is aware of three fires caused by this problem, two of which were in
the company's own test fleet vehicles, GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said.
The company is not aware of any injuries caused by the problem.

The vehicles must be turned on for the short circuit to occur, Wilkinson
said, but he could not say whether the washer fluid heating system needed
to be in use.

The models listed below, if they're equipped with a heated windshield
washer fluid system, are subject to the recall:

*

Model year 2006-08 Buick Lucerne sedans and model year 2008 Buick
Enclave SUVs.
*

Model year 2006-08 Cadillac DTS sedans and model year 2007-08
Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT SUVs.
*

Model year 2007-08 Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado trucks and
Suburban and Tahoe SUVs.
*

Model year 2007-08 GMC Acadia, Yukon, and Yukon XL SUVs and Sierra
trucks.
*

2008 Saturn Outlook SUVs.

The fluid heating system is a popular option on many of GM's large cars
and SUVs, said Wilkinson.

On cold days, the system heats windshield washer fluid before spraying it
onto the windshield, where it can melt ice and frost on the windshield.

To fix the problem, dealers will install a fuse that will shut off the
system in the event of a short circuit. GM has not yet provided NHTSA with
a schedule detailing when owners of affected vehicles will be notified.

August 2007 -- GM is recalling 437 MY 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac
Torrent sport utility vehicles for failing to conform to the requirements
of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash
Protection." In these vehicles, the right front passenger seat is built
with a passenger sensing system. When tested with a representative
unrestrained small adult, the system is required to turn the right front
passenger's frontal airbag on. An error in the seat sensor calibration can
cause it to fail this test. In addition, this condition can prevent the
airbag from turning off when the seat is occupied by a small child.
Whenever the front passenger seat is occupied, the driver should always
check the airbag indicator to see if the airbag is on or off. If it is not
correct for the situation, the passenger should be moved to a different
seat. This can increase the risk of injury to a seat occupant during
certain crash conditions. Dealers will reprogram the seat's electronic
control unit. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification
schedule for this campaign. 07V-344

OCTOBER 2007 -- GM is recalling 57,100 MY 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and
Pontiac Torrent passenger vehicles not equipped with optional roof rail
airbags or optional sunroof. These vehicles fail to comply with the
requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201, "Occupant
Protection in Interior Impact." During NHTSA impact tests, the interior
occupant protection test points exceeded the standard requirements. The
results of this test indicated a possibility of an increased risk of head
injury in a crash. Dealers will install an energy absorbing foam piece to
each of the a-pillar trim assemblies. The recall is expected to begin
during January 2008. 07V520

NOVEMBER 2007 -- GM is recalling 11,975 MY 2001 Chevrolet Silverado and
GMC Sierra pickup trucks equipped with an 8.1L V8 engine. The crankshaft
position can operate intermittently or fail completely. If the sensor
operates intermittently, the SES light may illuminate and the vehicle may
run rough. The engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or
after a cool down period. If the sensor becomes completely inoperative,
the engine will quit running and will not re-start. Either of these
failures can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the
crankshaft position sensor. The recall is expected to begin during
December 2007. This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis,
EA06-016, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 07V521

OCTOBER 2009 -- General Motors is recalling certain model year 2006
Chevrolet cobalt and Saturn Ion vehicles originally sold in or currently
registered in the states of Arizona and Nevada; and model year 2007
Chevrolet cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn ion vehicles originally sold in
or currently registered in the states of Arizona, California, Florida,
Nevada and Texas. The plastic supply or return port on the modular
reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack,
fuel will leak from the area. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel
may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be
affected. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could
result in a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of
charge. A special coverage will be implemented in the same time frame
for model year 2006 vehicles registered in Alabama, Arkansas,
California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North
Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas and
model year 2007 vehicles registered in: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia,
Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, north Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma,
South Carolina and Tennessee. The manufacturer has not yet provided an
owner notification schedule. 09V-419

DECEMBER 2007 -- GM is recalling 275,936 MY 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS, SRX,
STS, MY 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice, and MY 2007 Saturn Sky passenger
vehicles. The rear axle pinion seal does not meet all of the
specifications and may experience a fluid leak. A rear differential
failure may cause loss of motive power and possibly loss of vehicle
control increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the pinion
seal. The recall is expected to begin during February 2008. 07V-589

NEWS: NHTSA Investigates 2.7 Million GM Trucks, SUVs

Fire hazard probed in 21 models

ConsumerAffairs.com -- June 17, 2008 -- The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) has intensified a investigation of 21 models
of General Motors trucks and SUVS manufactured between 2006 and 2008
because of the possibility of an engine compartment fire.

More than 2,700,000 GM trucks and SUVs are the subject of the the
investigation because of the possibility that a fire might erupt inside
the engine compartment, even when the ignition is turned off.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) at the federal safety agency
reported that investigators are now aware of "41 non-crash engine
compartment fires" in the GM trucks and SUVs including 8 fires that may
have caused significant property damage.

The GM vehicles under investigation are:

• Cadillac Escalade ESV and EXT from the 2007 and 2008 model years •
Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 from the 2007 and 2008 model years • 2007
Chevrolet Avalanche 2500
• 2007 Chevrolet Silverado
• Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 from the 2007 and 2008 •
Chevrolet Suburban 1500 and 2500 from the 2007 and 2008 model •
Chevrolet Tahoe from the 2007 and 2008 models year • 2008 GMC Sierra,
• GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 from the 2007 and 2008 model years •
2007 GMC Sierra Classic
• 2007 GMC Silverado, GMC Yukon from the 2007 and 2008 model years •
GMC Yukon XL 1500, XL 2500 from the 2007 and 2008 model years • Hummer
H2 from the 2006 to 2007 model years • 2008 Hummer H2 Utility, and
•the Hummer H2 from the 2006 to 2008 model

"GM provided ODI with 41 allegations of non-crash engine compartment fires
including 16 allegations of fires origination with the ignition in the off
position," according to the NHTSA Web site

NEWS: Feds Probe Fire Complaints in Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon

ConsumerAffairs.Com -- February 9, 2008 -- The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating two consumer complaints
that 2007 Chevrolet Tahoes and GMC Yukons caught fire while parked in home
garages with the engines off.

The truck owners reported to NHTSA that both homes were badly damaged and
two people were injured in one of the fires.

The NHTSA Office of Defect Investigations as open a preliminary
investigation of both vehicles that could eventually lead to a recall of
the SUVs. The agency estimates as many as 400,000 vehicles would be
affected if a defect is identified and a recall ordered.

The General Motors SUVs are not equipped with the type of cruise control
system that causes a fire in Ford Motor Co. cars and trucks. Ford has
recalled more than 10 million vehicles because of a fire danger.

NHTSA also reported on its web site that a preliminary investigation is
under way of 2006 Lamborghini Gallardos following three reports of fires.
There are 600 of the Gallardos cars on U.S. roads.

I'm just getting tired of "john" posting about 1 recall 587,972 times!

WE KNOW ABOUT IT ALREADY!!! WE probably knew about it before he did!

Damn! Talk about beating an issue into the ground! Fine! John doesn't like
Toyotas. My advice:

DON'T BUY ONE!!!!!!!!!

Posting the same basic bullshit post across the Toyota groups is getting
tired.

Toyota will resolve the issue. Toyota has done something American
manufacturers don't so: they halted sales of their best selling units.
Rather than leaving them on the lot and "we'll figure it out after the
sales are made", they're taking a proactive approcah and grounding the
fleet. It could be argued this is costing them a LOT more than selling the
cars and then recalling them.

And since Toytota is a Japanese company interested in 'saving face', I
wouldn't expect another recall of this caliber for a long, long time,
regardless if it was their fault or a supplier's.

I used to work for a manufacturer that made space suits. We had something
like a first piece inspection for vendors, and then subsequent 'sampling'
of further similar parts from that manufacturer.

In 1987, an astronaut was suiting up for a mission and as he was the
mission was scrubbed. He was taking the suit off and he noticed something
about the buckle. Something was not right, and it had to do with the
connector in the buckle that connected the life support functions. If NASA
had not scrubbed the EVA, he would have died.

The company rescinded their 'sampling' for vendors in all aspects of the
EMU program, and ALL parts being used for EMUs were thereafter inspected
100%.

Now, I don't expect Toyota do go to this drastic a method, but I'll be you
their quality control will be tightened up quite a bit, and more than any
degree that GM has ever done.

I won't get into any GM/Toyota squabbles about QC and engineering.
Toyota's success speaks for itself.
What interests me about this is Toyota basically shut down, and the
implications of that.
I don't think it's a QC issue, but an electronics control issue.
That's serious when you consider the number of vehicles affected.
Last big one I remember involving that was the Honda emissions deal.
Think Cadillac had a recall on a similar score too, but it didn't
involve the number of vehicles, so didn't get the attention.
Anyway, expect plenty of static from the "wingers."
It's big news.
The anti-Jap crowd will start crowing like the right wingers did when
the Rep won a Dem senate seat in Mass.

HEY! I resemble that last remark. And, I'm from Mass!

That aside, are you talking about the V8/6/4 thing Caddy tried in the late
70's?

Same company that made the space suits and the jet engine controls. For
some reason, the successes in those programs could not be duplicated in
the Cadillac project, or the emissions testing program (those were made by
HS in Arizona...)

I have a Scion that has the trottle by wire, too. For some reason, the
recall does not effect that vehicle.

Yet...

No, an emissions thing. Couple, few years ago. Didn't pay much
attention. But like the Honda deal, and maybe the Toyota deal, it
involved the processors/programming.

I certainly wouldn't worry about it. As long as you shut it down with
the key and know gas pedal from brake, it's a non-issue.
Reminds me. The only car-related dream I've ever had is a "no brakes"
dream. More than once. Or should I call them nightmares?
Woke me up anyway.

I have a 5 speed/ Clutch, neutral, hit the key and return to the "ON"
position.

I've had throttles with mechanical linkages stick before, after a few
years when the exposed part of the cable got rusty. The fix was pretty
easy, though...a little PB Blaster and things ran new again.

If it's electronics causing the issue the fix is a little more difficult.
I haven't had access to an EPROM programmer for a few years...

No, its a software engineering issue. They've got to go back and
re-design and re-test a lot of software because they didn't implement
electronic throttle correctly, nor even to industry standard. At least
GM did THAT much and included a brake-overrides-throttle feature (as did
virtually every other manufacturer who uses electronic throttle- GM,
Ford, Chrysler, Benz, BMW, just to name a few).

If I were a Toyota owner, I'd probably be inclined to defend them too,
and a few mistakes don't negate everything good they ever did. But
c'mon. Sometimes you just gotta admit your favorite company screwed the
pooch and move on.

Interesting take. I'm wondering this:

Every car I ever had with a cruise control, the old vacuum types would
cancel out whne you got under about 30 MPH. When I got my Scion I noticed
that it does NOT cancel out, but stays at the set value. I don't recall if
it clears or not when you actually shut the car OFF but leave the cruise
ON. Until you turn the cruise OFF it stays where it was set.

I have also noticed that I have hit the little flipper on the steering
wheel at times. Fortunately, I realized the cruise does not cancel out
very early in my experience with this car, so if I'm on the highway doing
80, and then come into a town, I first RESET the cruise to a lower speed
and then TURN IT OFF, just in case I hit the flipper at 20 MPH in the
center of town.

I'm wondeing how many of these "runaway cars" can be contributed to that?

Actually I know at least once that Ford did this exact thing. There was a
concern with 2001 Escapes that caused Ford to halt sales. My Sister was in
the process of buying one, when the salesman had to put the sale on hold
until a problem with the model was resolved. I suspect that there are many
more cases. Most company don't try to spin this as a good thing. But I
suppsoe when virtually everything you sell is defective, you can't really
hide it.

I think you are giving Toyota way to much credit for handling this problem.
NHTSA was holding a flame thrower to Toyota's feet to make them do anything.
From what I have read this is not a problem that suddenly appeared a few
months ago. There have been complaints againt sticking throttle sfor years
and Toyta did nothing. Only after there were a few high profile (and stupid)
deaths did Toyta leap into action - AND START Y BLAMING THE CUSTOMERS, THE
AFTERMARKET MAT SUPPLIERS, and/or the AMERICAN COMAPNY THAT MADE THE
ACCELERATOR PEDALS. It seems like in Toyota's view, their cars are perfect;
the problem is the dumb ass Americans who buy them.

And they're sure getting a black eye for that now, aren't they......

I just hope they get the problem fixed before anyone else gets killed.
Granted, if you don't know how to turn your engine off and/or put the
transaxle into neutral, you shouldn't be driving. But then again, the
throttle shouldn't stick on your car, either. Kind of a double-edged
sword in some respects. Part of the blame falls on the manufacturer,
but just as much blame falls on the people owning the cars who
obviously haven't got a clue on what to do in an emergency.

"As early as 2004, authorities investigated reports of unintended
acceleration in Toyota's best-selling model, the Camry.
But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration looked at
incidents lasting only 1 second or less.
'john', master of widespread panic, and a nimrod to boot, here are the
facts:

Which models are affected by the recall/stop sale? Toyota’s accelerator
pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota
Division vehicles:

* Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
* Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
* 2009-2010 Matrix,
* 2005-2010 Avalon,
* Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
* Certain 2010 Highlander,
* 2007-2010 Tundra,
* 2008-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are affected by these actions. Also
not affected are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris,
4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids,
which will remain for sale.

Further, Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin
with "J" are not affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall.

So, if you have a "J: VIN car, no worry. These were fitted with Japanese
made Denso parts and are not affected.

Why are you stopping production at your factories?
Production is being stopped temporarily at five North American production
facilities to assess and coordinate activities related to the recall
announced on January 21.

Wow. Only US made vehicles affected.

OK, 'john'? Got it now?
