Americans show preference for U.S.-made cars, poll finds

America's love affair with the automobile has a new spark -- a renewed
affection for U.S.-made cars after a long dalliance with foreign
automakers.

Slightly more Americans now say the U.S. makes better-quality vehicles
than Asia does, with 38% saying U.S. cars are best and 33% naming
autos made by Asian countries, according to an Associated Press-GfK
Poll.

The survey suggests those numbers are largely fueled by a plunge in
Toyota's reputation and an upsurge in Ford's. The poll was conducted
in March, as Toyota was being roiled by nightmarish publicity over its
recall of more than 8 million vehicles around the globe and
allegations that it responded sluggishly to safety concerns.

I've never owned a foreign car and most likely never will. You do
have to be a bit cautious as some foreign cars are being sold as
American cars, like the Chevrolet Aveo etc.

engine computers, window motors, instrument clusters, window glass,
wiring harnesses [etc] come from? "domestics" rely heavily on imported
componentry.

Even so called "Foriegn" cars rely heavily on imported
componentry. The entire auto manufacturing industry
is now globalized for better or worse. For example,
the Prius accelerator assembly which has been blamed
for Sudden Unintended Acceleration problems
recently in the media and Congress actually is made by a
Canadian Company called CTS - even though the Prius
is sold as a car that is Made in Japan [1] !!!!


Toyota has gotten a great deal of negative media and
political attention in the last year or so - they are currently
the whipping boy of the auto industry. Three years ago,
GM and Chrysler were the whipping boy of the auto industry.
GM has shed many of their less popular brands,e,g, Saturn,
and Chryslers had been pared down singificantly. So its
a good thing that what left of GM' and Chrysler is looking
better than three years ago - hopefully this will equate to
higher sales figures too - especially for Chrysler which is
still on life support. As far as being the darling of the
media or the public - that will pass too. Public opinion
is a fickled thing.



[1] btw: Popular Mechanics looked into the Sudden
Unintended Acceleration (SUA) allegations with regards to the
Toyota Prius and found thar barring malicious intent
(which is very generous of him) that the rare incidents
of SUA on the Prius were likely due to driver error.

I find it hard to believe nothing is made in the US anymore, and all
the US automakers do is put the pieces together.. Yes some things I'm
sure are purchased from other countries, but not everything!

Next you'll be telling me everything in the world is made in China. ;)

*agenda* behind all of this is to suspicious. I could give 2 shits about
what kind of car it is it's the *dirty* politics that's the real culprit
here & special interests, business as usual in Washington DC. Especially
with a huge stake in Unions & GM (Governement Motors).

That's good news. I've always been against all those imports from Canada
and Mexico that GM, Ford, Chrysler, and to a lesser extent Toyota, have
been trying to sell in the U.S..

Give me a U.S. made Ford, Honda, Subara, Hyundai, Toyota, BMW, or
Mercedes, or Kia over those imports from Canada or Mexico any day.
