Discussion:
replacement tires, run-flats vs non-run-flats

My 2006 GS300 is equipped with run-flat tires. Once you have a flat,
the manual suggests replacing all four tires. I am approaching
40,000 without a flat, lucky me, but I don't think I'll be as lucky
much longer. I plan to change my tires very soon, but would like to
switch to regular radials, not run flats. Anyone had any experience
switching from run-flats to non-run-flat radials?

PS: I do not want to change rims to accommodate non-run-flats.

I have changed my runflats on a 02 SC430 and have been very happy. Runs much
better. I bought a pump and repair kit instead of carrying a spare. It has
worked for me since my dash instruments tell me when the tire has lost as
little as two pounds of air.

You may be able to find run-flat support for regular pneumatic tires.
I think it was in UK news. Run flat tires allows the manufacturer to
remove the spare tire, therefore saving some weight (increase MPG by a
fraction). It also helps maintain some directional control when you
have a higher speed blowout.

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard may require manufacturer to
provide a pneumatic spare, but does the own need to drive around with
a spare? Will a tire shop install a non-spec tire? etc etc
